What I really appreciate about this apple pie recipe is that, despite using whole wheat flour, it still manages to be absolutely delicious. It’s a wonderful feeling to know I’m opting for a slightly healthier option, especially during the holiday season when it’s easy to indulge in all the tempting, less healthy dishes that seem to be everywhere.
But there’s no need to fret because when you prepare this apple pie, it still tastes just as good. While it may not be the epitome of healthiness, it does provide a fair share of nutrients, making those calories entirely worthwhile.
One more aspect I genuinely cherish about this recipe is that my mother-in-law is also a fan of it. As you might be aware, when it comes to pleasing family members, in-laws can often be the most challenging critics. So, whenever she comes to visit, I know she looks forward to my apple pie, and it truly warms my heart to prepare it for her.
If you find yourself without whole wheat flour, there’s no need to worry because all-purpose flour makes for a great substitute. Furthermore, an interesting little twist I sometimes I do is dividing the flour portion right down the middle.
Ingredients:
Bottom Crust Ingredients:
- 2 Cups Flour, whole wheat (or all-purpose)
- 2 Butter sticks
- 1/2 Cup Brown sugar
Filling Ingredients:
- 6-7 Apples chopped into small cubes (we used apple crisp)
- 1 Tablespoon Flour, whole wheat
- 1 Tablespoon Sugar
- 1 Teaspoon Cinnamon powder
- 2-3 Tablespoons Water
Top Crust Ingredients:
- 2 1/2 Cups Flour, whole wheat
- 1/2 Cup Shortening
- 2 Tablespoons Butter, unsalted
- 1 Tablespoon Sugar
- 1/2 Teaspoon Salt
- 6-7 Tablespoons Water, cold
Topping Ingredients (optional):
- Vanilla ice cream
- Cinnamon powder to sprinkle
Now, let’s get into it, and make this apple pie recipe with me!
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and prepare a baking dish for the pie with parchment paper or by greasing.
- Cut apples into cubes, and heat up a pot to medium heat, then add all of the filling ingredients, chopped apples, water, flour, sugar, and cinnamon powder, and stir often for about 15 minutes.
- While your apples are cooking, mix the bottom crust ingredients until dough forms, roll the dough into a disc form then place it into the baking dish, you can adjust with your fingers or a spoon to form a nice bottom crust with “walls” around it.
- Put the bottom crust in the oven for about 7-10 minutes, while the filling still cooking in the pot.
- Take the bottom crust of the oven and set it aside, also turn off the pot with the apple filling.
- Mix top crust ingredients and sprinkle some flour on the dough so it’s easier to roll into a disc, as we did with the bottom crust.
- Optional: Use a cookie cutter or decorate the top crust as you wish. I just cut a star in the middle and just marked additional smaller stars.
- Pour apple filling into the baking dish with crust, then add the top crust carefully, if you have excess dough around it, just fold in, like you would with a pizza dough.
- Brush apple pie with preferred milk.
- Finally, bake the pie for 30-35 minutes, or until the top crust is nicely golden.
- Serve warm or cold, your choice, but I love to eat it at least 10 minutes after it is out of the oven, with vanilla ice cream on top and cinnamon powder.
When it comes to mixing the bottom crust, my preferred method is to start by blending all the ingredients together, leaving out the butter initially. As I gradually introduce the butter, I opt to cut it into small pieces, allowing it to be more evenly distributed throughout the mixture. This technique ensures that the butter is smoothly integrated, preventing the formation of large, unmixed butter chunks.
About whole wheat flour
Another aspect to consider regarding the use of whole wheat flour is that the dough might have a firmer and slightly less pliable feel, but that’s perfectly okay with me. I gladly embrace this change, knowing that I’m making a healthier choice.
When it’s time to roll out the dough, I like to create a disc that’s a bit larger than the baking dish. This way, when I place it inside, it’s more manageable to shape the crust’s walls, preventing the apple filling from spilling out when slicing the pie. However, it’s important to note that this step is entirely optional. Personally, I don’t mind a slightly messy apple pie, as long as it’s bursting with amazing flavor.
About pie decoration
I must confess that every time I set out to make pies, I find myself having a hard time creating an exceptionally charming decoration. However, more often than not, time seems to slip away, and I never quite achieve that decorative masterpiece I imagine. But I promise, the next time I share an apple pie on this platform, I’ll make it a point to focus on the presentation.
What’s truly wonderful, though, is that the appearance doesn’t weigh heavily in the balance because the flavor is just so incredible. The delightful news is that regardless of the visual appeal, my family tends to devour the entire pie in no time at all. It’s a testament to how delicious this apple pie truly is.
I frequently find myself preparing this apple pie recipe as autumn begins, and it serves as the ideal seasonal dessert for all the delectable holiday dishes I’ll be savoring from now until the end of winter. There’s truly nothing quite as satisfying as indulging in a warm and delightful dessert on those chilly days. It’s the comfort and coziness that a slice of this pie brings that makes it the perfect welcome to the season of hearty, hearty feasts that lie ahead.
Eat apple pie with vanilla ice cream and cinnamon powder
I cannot emphasize enough how incredible a warm dessert pairs with the cold, creamy delight of vanilla ice cream. In my experience, there’s an undeniable magic when you sprinkle a dash of cinnamon powder on top of that vanilla ice cream.
They truly are the perfect companions to this apple pie recipe. Don’t get me wrong; the apple pie on its own boasts amazing flavors, but when you introduce that scoop of vanilla ice cream and that subtle dusting of cinnamon powder, it’s as if the entire dessert experience is elevated by a thousandfold.
So there you have it, my go-to apple pie recipe that never fails to hit the spot. It’s the perfect dessert to warm your heart and fill your home with that cozy, cinnamon-apple aroma. Don’t forget the vanilla ice cream, and a sprinkle of cinnamon – trust me, it takes this pie from good to absolutely scrumptious. Whether it’s for a special occasion or just a cozy night in, this apple pie has got you covered. Give it a try, and I’m sure it’ll become a regular guest at your dessert table. Enjoy!
