Although we aren’t experts in upholstery, my stay at the Delano Hotel in Las Vegas inspired me to have a tall white headboard for my bed. So, I decided to enlist my sister’s help and embark on a DIY headboard project!
Initially, I had the idea of covering as much wall space between the windows as possible with the headboard panels. However, during the creation process, I overlooked the additional width the wrapping would add. As a result, the headboard ended up with five panels, which I centered, of course.
Before delving into the details of how I created this DIY headboard, it’s important to consider another crucial aspect. The base of my bed, which I sourced from IKEA (linked below), is quite heavy. This allowed me to simply lean the headboard against the wall and push the bed, which kept the headboard securely in place without any issues. However, if you have a lighter bed frame and attempt to replicate this with the heavier plywood headboard I made, it might not be the most suitable option. So, keep the weight of your bed frame in mind when deciding to create a similar headboard.
Let me elaborate further on the considerations and details surrounding the creation of the DIY headboard.
When I decided to create a tall white headboard for my bed, I wanted it to be a visually striking centerpiece in my bedroom. I opted to use plywood as the base material for its sturdiness and ease of customization. After measuring the space between the windows and the desired height, I cut the plywood into five panels to create the headboard.
However, during the process, I underestimated the additional width the fabric wrapping would add to each panel. As a result, I had to adjust my initial plan and settle for the five-panel design. Nonetheless, I made sure to center the panels on the wall to maintain a balanced and aesthetically pleasing look.
One of the fortunate factors that worked in my favor was the substantial weight of my bed’s base, which was an IKEA model (linked above). This heaviness allowed me to lean the headboard against the wall and then push the bed into place, effectively securing the headboard without the need for complex mounting or attachments.
It is essential to note that this setup might not be ideal for everyone. If you have a lighter bed frame or a different type of base, the headboard’s weight and dimensions may not be a perfect match. In such cases, it’s advisable to explore alternative methods of mounting or securing the headboard to ensure its stability and safety.
Materials:
With 9 ft ceilings in my house, I had a vision of grandeur for the headboard panels, aiming for maximum height. Consequently, I opted for 8 ft tall panels. To achieve this, I headed to Home Depot and acquired an 8 ft tall sheet of plywood, with a width of approximately 3 ft.
To make the plywood more manageable and create the desired 8 ft tall panels, I requested Home Depot to cut the sheet into 1 ft sections. This way, I obtained a total of 6 panels, perfectly suited to my design and the height of the room. The convenience of having them pre-cut allowed me to focus on the creative aspects of the headboard project with ease.
- 8 ft x 1 ft Plywood panels
- 8 ft x 1 ft Foam panels
- 9 ft x at least 1.5 ft White Vynil Fabric Cuts
- 9 ft x at least 1.5 ft White Vynil Fabric Cuts
- 9 ft x at least 1.5 ft Dacron fabric to wrap around the foam.
- Staple gun (Upholstery)
As I’ve mentioned before, upholstery isn’t something we’re well-versed in, but I feel compelled to share a valuable lesson learned during the headboard project. If I were to embark on this endeavor again, I would undoubtedly prioritize acquiring an electric wood stapler. The manual stapling process proved to be quite laborious, and our hands ended up quite sore from the effort of securing the fabric.
In retrospect, the investment in an electric wood stapler would have made a significant difference in both time and physical strain. The ease and efficiency it brings to the process would have been truly invaluable.
So, if you’re considering creating your own DIY headboard or tackling any upholstery project, I highly recommend opting for the right tools to make your experience a breeze. Below, I’ve provided a link to an electric wood stapler available on Amazon that should serve you well in your creative journey.
We would genuinely appreciate it if you decide to create this headboard and share your experience with us in the comments. Your insights and feedback would not only help others who might be attempting a similar project but also inspire us to continue exploring new DIY ventures. Happy crafting!
In conclusion, the DIY headboard project was a rewarding and creative endeavor. It added a touch of elegance and personality to my bedroom, inspired by my stay at the Delano Hotel in Las Vegas. Nonetheless, considering the weight and stability of your bed frame is crucial to ensure the headboard remains safely in place and enhances the overall aesthetic of your sleeping space.
