I saved a bunch of Pinterest pictures of kids sitting on pillows around low tables with a cool boho style. I wanted to have a birthday party like that for my daughter. When the time came, I couldn’t find long and affordable low tables for all her friends. So, I reached out to my sister Marisol, who knows a thing or two about cutting wood, and we decided to make one ourselves. It seemed like a fun DIY project that could also be useful for the blog and my daughter’s party.
First things first, we headed to Home Depot or Lowes to get our materials. I like that they offer free wood cutting, as long as it’s straight lines. I was trying to keep the cost down, so I opted for a budget-friendly wood panel. Looking back, I should have gone for a thicker and higher-quality wood because it wasn’t even that much more expensive. But since I’ve already completed the project, I’ll share how my DIY low table for kids turned out.
I wanted a long table, but I thought it wouldn’t fit in our car. So, we decided to go for two smaller tables that we could stack in the car. We picked a big wood panel for the table surface and asked the person who cuts wood to give us two rectangles, each measuring 3 feet by 4 feet. We also chose a long piece of wood for the table legs and got 10 pieces, each 1 foot long – 4 legs for each table and one extra in the middle for extra support.
My sister had a handy little wood sanding machine, but you can also get basic sanding done at Lowes or Home Depot to avoid splinters. Before that, we bought some white paint, wood plaster/filler and for the screws, my sister already had them. Then, we went home to finish the project.
Before screwing or painting, we added wood to plaster to the uneven cheap wood panel I got to get it as smooth as possible, then sanded the surface, the edges pretty well, and of course the legs.
Then the screwing part, my sister had to do it because I have no idea how to do that, but once she explained it seemed pretty simple. We are not at all experts, but apparently, there is this cool machine that created the whole before adding the screw, that way your wood doesn’t crack, at least that’s what I understood.
After finishing the legs, we covered up the screws with more plaster or caulk and let it dry for a bit. Then, we sanded it smooth.
Next, we got to the enjoyable part, which was painting both tables and letting them dry. After that, we had even more fun collecting all the cute pink pillows I could find to make sure there were enough for all of my daughter’s friends at the party.
I wish I had taken more pictures when everything was decorated, but I did manage to snap a few to share on the blog. I used cute plates and cups that matched the party’s color scheme, placed a birthday number balloon for my daughter, and added some flowers as a centerpiece.
I really enjoyed watching my kids’ reactions when they saw the table all set up for their friends. All the kids looked adorable as they ate pizza and cupcakes together.
In conclusion, it was a fun DIY project to create a low table for my daughter’s birthday party. The kids had a great time, and it was rewarding to see their smiles as they enjoyed their snacks together. It’s all about simple joys and making memories with loved ones.
